MBUSI Gives Back to the Alabama Community
Mercedes-Benz U.S. International is proud of our 20-year production history in Alabama. Proud of our growing family of Team Members. Proud of our community involvement. And proud of our world-class vehicles. Two decades ago we pioneered modern automotive manufacturing in the South. Today we celebrate our continued growth with new Team Members, new models, and new expansions to our plant.
In 1993 we put our roots down in Alabama and dreamed big. Since then, with the support of Daimler AG, we have donated more than $12 million to our local community, with a specific focus on families and the betterment of this region. We’ll never forget the warm welcome Alabama showed us when MBUSI was searching for a home more than 20 years ago. It’s been a great ride, and we’re ready to turn the key to start the next chapter.
AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY
MBUSI HELPS TO IMPROVE THE LIVES OF CANCER PATIENTS THROUGH ANNUAL DONATIONS
Today it seems that just about everyone knows someone who’s been affected by cancer. At MBUSI, it’s a cause that’s close to our heart, and we’ve made significant donations to support those affected by a disease that impacts so many individuals, not only in Alabama, but across the country and the globe.
Since our early days, MBUSI has supported the American Cancer Society through our Team Member-driven efforts with the Making Strides for Breast Cancer and Relay for Life walk fundraisers and the Hope Gala. In addition, MBUSI continues to donate two vehicles to the American Cancer Society Hope Lodge in Birmingham to make sure residents have a means of transportation when their best hope for effective treatment may be in another city. The Hope Lodge offers cancer patients and their caregivers a free place to stay so they can focus on getting better. We realize that providing patients with these resources gives them one less thing to worry about as they move forward on the road to recovery.
CHILDREN’S OF ALABAMA
SUPPORTING ALABAMA’S SICK AND INJURED CHILDREN THROUGH HOSPITAL DONATIONS
MBUSI puts significant focus on ensuring the children in our community are well-cared-for and suited for growth and success, even when tragic life events get in the way.
Since 1911, Children’s of Alabama has provided specialized medical care for ill and injured children. Children’s provides care for youngsters from every county in Alabama and it is the only medical center in Alabama dedicated solely to the care and treatment of children. This year, MBUSI donated to the Children’s of Alabama Burn Unit. The support allowed the hospital to purchase a 3D Pain Distraction System which helps to distract patients from the very painful recovery required when burned and admitted to Children’s.
HABITAT FOR HUMANITY
MBUSI HELPS BUILD HOME WITH BIRMINGHAM HABITAT FOR HUMANITY
Over a six-week period in 2016, MBUSI partnered with Habitat for Humanity of Greater Birmingham to sponsor an entire Habitat home build. More than 450 Team Members took time out of their schedules to make a difference in a Pleasant Grove community member’s life after they were affected by a tornado that hit the area in April 2011 and destroyed nearly 400 homes.
Jason Hoff, MBUSI President and CEO added, “Our vision is to make this community a more caring, more connected and more prosperous place to live.” As a result of our team’s dedication and hard work, we were able to provide a fellow citizen with a new place to call home.
JUVENILE DIABETES RESEARCH FOUNDATION (JDRF)
SUPPORTING THE CAUSES CLOSEST TO OUR TEAM MEMBERS
At MBUSI, our Team Members are like family, which is why we like to support the causes that mean so much to them. One of our very own Team Members, Hans Crouse, has a strong connection to diabetes. Hans’ son, Cameron, was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at a very early age. Ever since, Hans and his family have been focused on helping the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) find a cure for the disease.
It’s causes like this that are so close to MBUSI and our growing family of Team Members. Which is why for years, MBUSI has sponsored Hans and the JDRF through donations to the JDRF Wine for the Walk and the organization’s annual gala. We are proud to support the charities that mean the most to our own Team Members and strive to continue to focus on the issues that hit home.
LEAN ON: ALABAMA
MBUSI SUPPORTS WOMEN’S GROUP FOCUSED ON ENCOURAGING AND EDUCATING WOMEN IN ALABAMA
MBUSI strongly encourages collaboration, development, and investment in each other and the community. That’s why in 2017, we sponsored Lean On: Alabama’s inaugural Women's Lifestyle and Leadership Conference in Tuscaloosa. Lean On: Alabama is a non-partisan, non-profit organization that brings women together to form intergenerational partnerships by building an innovative statewide platform. The organization provides opportunities for the women of Alabama to build relationships while learning from others who have forged the path to success as leaders in their families, communities, churches, government, and business.
We’re proud to support a team that provides opportunities to invest one's time, talent, and resources in opportunities which encourage, educate, and equip women to act, to lead, and to impact Alabama.
RONALD MCDONALD HOUSE CHARITIES OF ALABAMA
MBUSI IMPROVES RECOVERY FOR SICK CHILDREN WITH DONTATION TO RONALD MCDONALD HOUSE
Consistent with our efforts to improve the lives of children who are sick or injured, MBUSI made a special donation to sponsor two Family Units at the Ronald McDonald House in Birmingham and the DCH Family Room in Tuscaloosa.
The Ronald McDonald House of Alabama provides guest families with all the comforts of home – plus a local support network – so they can focus on their children’s healing. We’re proud that we can help provide a safe, affordable, supportive “home-away-from-home” for sick or injured children and their families as they move through difficult times. Through this effort, we will continue to work towards our shared mission of keeping our children, and their families, on a path to success.
Habitat for Humanity
MBUSI Helps Build Home with Tuscaloosa Habitat for Humanity
Mercedes-Benz U.S. International (MBUSI) doesn’t just talk about our commitment to the community, we put our words into action on a regular basis. In late April 2015, 50 MBUSI Team Members participated in a Tuscaloosa Habitat for Humanity building project in the Foster Ferry Road area and were able to put their unwavering attention to quality and efficiency to work.
Our Team Members took time out of their schedules to make a difference in the life of a member of the Tuscaloosa County community who was left completely paralyzed after a severe car accident. As a result, we were able to help a fellow citizen accomplish many much-needed construction projects for her home that otherwise would have gone undone.
For the past 20 years, we have been working to make Tuscaloosa County the best community in the South. We’ll never forget the warm welcome Alabama showed us when MBUSI was searching for a home 20 years ago. Today, we are proud to help welcome our neighbors home too.
YMCA of Tuscaloosa
MBUSI Supports Child Development through YMCA Donation
Mercedes-Benz U.S. International (MBUSI) and the YMCA of Tuscaloosa have been close community partners for the past 20 years ever since the YMCA welcomed our German colleagues in 1993 and helped them acclimate to their new Alabama homes. MBUSI and the YMCA have many shared values and goals to support children and families, encourage good health, and foster connections through educational training, sports, and fun.
For all these reasons and more, MBUSI is proud to invest $250,000 to sponsor The Mercedes-Benz U.S. International, Inc. Child Development Room at the YMCA’s new facility in downtown Tuscaloosa . Through this effort, we will continue to work towards our shared mission of keeping our children, and their families, on a path to success.
Red Mountain Theatre company
MBUSI Serves Under-Privileged Communities through Local Theatre
Mercedes-Benz U.S. International (MBUSI) takes its commitment to supporting community arts programs seriously by encouraging participation in and patronage of local theatre programs.
Through a dedicated partnership with the Red Mountain Theatre, MBUSI is honored to help fund high-quality theatre productions that reach approximately 15,000 underserved children each year.
To further the success of Red Mountain Theater Company’s initiatives to reach underserved neighborhoods, MBUSI joins our local business community and patrons in donations that benefit underprivileged children and disadvantaged neighborhoods in Alabama that might otherwise never experience the inspiration that theatre brings to its audiences.
In addition to financially supporting Red Mountain Company’s philanthropic efforts, we at MBUSI also are regular patrons of the stage. In May 2015, we proudly sponsored the theater’s summer production of The Wiz.
MBUSI Ensure Environmental Protection
Mercedes-Benz U.S. International (MBUSI) puts significant focus on ensuring that our plant operations protect the environment that surrounds us, including our rivers and wildlife. We consider ourselves environmental stewards of Tuscaloosa County and were honored to support Black Warrior Riverkeeper, a nonprofit clean water advocacy organization, through our lead sponsorship of Earthbound’s Earthfest on April 18, 2015.
As explained by MBUSI President and CEO Jason Hoff, “Our plant sits on 1,000 acres of land which we share with beavers, geese, and a wide array of wildlife. Our high-quality rainwater ponds and spill control systems allow these creatures to co-exist with us, and serve as a testament to their effectiveness. Respecting nature and ensuring we are doing our part to maintain wildlife habitats is an important part of the MBUSI culture.”
The Black Warrior River basin includes parts of 17 Alabama counties and provides approximately half of &Birmingham’s drinking water and all of the water for Tuscaloosa and many other cities in Tuscaloosa County.
